Plans & getting started
QIs OverlayThing free?
Yes. Currently the only plan offered is free. All features are currently available at no cost to the user. There is a world where we could introduce plans or some sort of payment system to help support and offset the cost, and the infrastructure is there to support that, but no decisions have been made. For full transparency: ALL core features will remain free forever. Your chatbot (and modules), overlays, tipping and the rest will never be gated behind payment.
QDo I need to install anything?
No. Everything runs in your browser and is hosted for you. You design overlays in the studio, then add one URL as a browser source in your streaming software, nothing to download or keep updated.
QCan I bring my setup over from StreamElements or Streamlabs?
Classic StreamElements overlays, alert settings, goals and history can be imported. See Import from StreamElements for the full list. The newer "Elements" system is a separate product and is not imported. The import is best effort: most things come across cleanly, but expect to do some manual tweaking afterward to get everything looking exactly right.
StreamLabs importing is not supported at this time.
Compatibility
QDoes it work with OBS, Streamlabs and Meld?
Overlays are a standard browser source, so they work in any software that supports one, including OBS Studio, Streamlabs Desktop and Meld. Remote Control adds two-way control on top for OBS and Meld specifically.
QIs this only for Twitch, or also YouTube and Kick?
OverlayThing is built around Twitch: alerts, the chatbot and channel events all key off your Twitch connection. Tip and merch pages work for any audience regardless of platform. That said, the platform is already designed to support multiple platforms. If there is enough growth and interest, building out YouTube and Kick is well within reach should we choose to do it.
How it runs
QDoes the chatbot need my computer running?
No. The bot runs on our servers, so timers, commands and moderation keep working whether or not you are streaming or your machine is on. Overlays only render while your browser source is loaded on stream.
QWhy aren't my edits showing on stream?
Edits autosave and push live within a second or two, with no publish step. If a source has "Shut down when not visible" enabled, switch scenes back to reload it. More fixes in Troubleshooting.
Disclosures
QDoes OverlayThing use AI?
Yes, we utilize AI for a few features. We have an AI widget builder and command builder powered by Anthropic. We also use a combination of OpenAI Moderation and Cerebras for moderation and text formatting. You can disable the creation AI features in your dashboard settings if you would like to opt out.
QWhere is my data stored?
Currently we're utilizing cloud servers located in Canada for our compute and database storage. Asset storage uses Cloudflare's WNAM, which is literally "Western North America" and not one specific region. We do not currently have plans to offer choice of region.
