What it is
The Companion is a small app that runs on your streaming machine and signs in to the same account as your dashboard. Where the dashboard lives in a browser tab, the Companion lives on your desktop: a control room that stays open beside your game, updates itself in the background, and keeps working while you are heads-down.
It surfaces the parts of OverlayThing you reach for mid-stream | your activity feed, live chat, your chatbot, and your media queue | so you are not tabbing back to the browser to read a redemption or tweak a command. And it adds one thing a browser tab cannot: a scripting engine that runs small scripts on your machine in response to your stream.
No. Everything the Companion shows also lives in the dashboard, and your overlays and chatbot run in the cloud whether the app is open or not. The Companion is for streamers who want a desktop control room, and for scripts that need to do things only a local app can, like pressing a hotkey or talking to OBS.
Native, not a browser in a box
A lot of desktop apps from web teams are really a whole copy of Chromium with a web page running inside it (the Electron approach), which is why so many "lightweight" tools quietly park on hundreds of megabytes of memory and spin your fans up. The Companion is not one of them. It is a genuinely native app: a compiled Rust core with its interface drawn straight to the GPU by Slint, with no bundled browser and no web page pretending to be a desktop app.
Decisions like these matter on the one machine that is already busy running your game and your encoder. The Companion installs small, opens almost instantly, and idles in the background on a fraction of the memory and CPU an Electron app would use. It is built for speed and to stay out of your frame rate's way while it keeps your feed, chat, chatbot and scripts live.
